Opinion: Prognosis of the 2019 Presidential Election and beyond

I’m neither a prophet, nor a soothsayer, but I dare to say that 2019 Presidential election is almost predictable. Politics is undoubtedly fluid, as political interests which drives political actions are transitory, especially in Nigeria where political parties are, but mere vehicles to power, hence politicians align and re-align for political ambition, which are more often than not, self-serving.  The rhetoric of self-less public service, is a ruse, to deceive the gullible. Little wonder in politics what you see or hear is not what you get.

In a sane society, an election is a formal group decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century. Unfortunately, election time in Africa is war time. It’s not the usual carnival-like events, in celebration of democracy, as is evident in other clime. In Africa, and in Nigeria in particular, election is a do or die. And there are growing concerns the 2019 electoral process will see new violence. Nigeria has never been so divided, along, political party, religious and ethnic lines. And the present government contributed in no small measure to the deepening of this deep hatred, and hate comments. This is a fact, and consequently, politics has become madness in Nigeria.

ESSAY: Corruption in Nigeria- An Overview

Corruption is Nigeria’s 37th State …..laughing Out Loud!

Nigeria has 36 states + the federal capital territory. But corruption has assumed the 37th state.  This definition is perhaps in an attempt to explain the humongous stature, corruption has assumed in Nigeria, hence the notion of corruption being the 37th state in Nigeria. Corruption is a persistent phenomenon in Nigeria.

Two major factors are responsible for the rise of corruption in Nigeria-the rise of public administration and the discovery of oil and natural gas are two major events believed to have led to the sustained increase in the incidence of political corruption in the country.

Other school of thought have however argued that the military incursion into politics entrenched corruption into our socio-political and economic life. But nearly 2 decades after the military left the scene, corruption has continued to fester, despite what I may describe as lip-service effort by successive administrations to bring corruption to a halt.

ESSAY: Plastic Waste Pollution- An Environmental Time Bomb Waiting to Happen

Environment is everything that is around us. It can be living or non-living things. And it is visible but also invincible....think about the air you breath, you can neither touch it, nor see it, but it’s essential to human existence as it is also part of man's environment. Hence, environment includes physical, chemical and other natural forces. Merriam-Webster aptly described environment as the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (such as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival.

Going further, environmental issues are harmful effects of human activity on the biophysical environment. Over the years, as human population rises, man in his efforts to conquer, through innovations and in harnessing resources buried beneath the earth, have degraded his own environment, thereby putting self at great risk. Environmental destruction caused by humans is a global problem, and this is a problem that is ongoing every day. By year 2050, the global human population is expected to grow by 2 billion people, thereby reaching a level of 9.6 billion people. And Nigeria is estimated to be conservatively around 150 Million people.

#2019: While other presidential aspirants are ready for a presidential debate, the incumbent President Moh'd Buhari is still undecided.

The spokesman for Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN), said no decision had been taken on whether Buhari would participate in the debate or not.

"I am not the only one that will take that decision. When that time comes, all those concerned will sit down and take a decision on that and we shall make our decision public” Keyamo said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Nigeria Election Debate Group, Mr John Momoh, told journalists in Abuja on Thursday that the group had fixed January 19, 2019 for a debate for presidential candidates of different political parties taking part in the 2019 elections, and would be held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

He said the debate would focus on the nation's economy, electricity, job creation, health care, education and security, among others.

Nigerians must insist on an open, fair debate, where  aspirants must explain to Nigerians how they intend to take us to the Next Level, or how to Get Nigeria Working Again....

Article: Privatization of the Nigerian Police: The bane of security in Nigeria

All the problems we are having with insecurity is largely due to the privatization and commercialization of the police, and security in general in Nigeria writes Tope Fasua.

One of my favourite feel-good movies is titled Year One. Featuring fat man Jack Black, it is a parody of what may have happened in the beginning of time; the age of the Early Man. In the movie, Jack Black’s character is the lazy guy who can’t hunt wild animals and always has this ‘stupid’ idea that there is something better on the other side of the world, than their idyllic village. At some point he satisfies his curiosity and eats the forbidden fruit, is found out and all hell breaks lose in the village. The event I intend to point out happens when he is being prepared for sacrifice to the gods, for committing an unimaginable taboo. As the celebrations towards the human sacrifice wears on, one hut in the village catches fire. Everyone sees that the hut is on fire but shrugs it off because it isn’t their hut. Of course since huts are built with sticks and straws, the whole village is razed down in a matter of minutes and they all become homeless.
