The Church of England has appointed its first female bishop, Rev. Libby
Lane . The historic appointment comes just four weeks after the Church
of England’s ruling General Synod formally enacted a change to canon law
opening the episcopate to women for the first time.
She will
become the new Bishop of Stockport, a post that has been vacant since
May. Rev Lane has been the vicar at St Peter’s Hale and St Elizabeth’s
Ashley, in the diocese of Chester, since 2007.
